Shower works!!!!!

Yes, the new taps are fitted and the shower works like a dream, I let Paul try it out first as he was more in the need of a shower than me.

Today we met up with Ann Keith Al and Del for a spot of lunch in Wetherspoons. As Del had bought his computer to avail himself of their Wi Fi the boys got talking GAMES well Paul and Del did Keith couldn't understand what all the fuss was about and I am with him on that one. So some of the talk was tactical shooting of the enemy and how to deploy your rockets. The girls meanwhile talked sensibly.

After lunch it was a quick trip to Asda to get food for Paul as I am off to Surrey on Friday to catch up with Jack Clare Alfie and Millie.

Paul is now trying his luck on the fishing front, he did manage to catch a little perch yesterday but nothing since. All together now Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.

Just my luck!

I don't know what it is about Sunday’s but I always seem to hang about in my PJ’s for a bit longer than normal then have a nice shower while Paul is chatting to Eric. Today it was colour my hair day as well, yes I’ve admitted it I am not a natural blonde in fact I cant even remember what my  hair colour was, I have been blonde for so long and of course my hair now would be decidedly grey under all this colouring. Paul had put the heating on for me to get the water nice and hot which was very kind of him. So into the shower I jumped, there I was colour rinsed off conditioner taking effect and lathered up. I turn the tap back on and oh s***t  the water is freezing whereas before it had been hot hot hot. I called for Paul “what “ was the response, “get your backside here” was MY response. I then had to explain what the problem was, so what does he do but turn the tap on to check that I am not imagining the water is cold. I am sure you can picture all this, me standing covered in lather trying to keep out of the way of a freezing cold shower. “it looks like the taps have packed up again”  (we have thermostatic taps) oh great, what am I supposed to do now?  Rinse off in cold water was the only option, so that is what I did then wrapped myself in a towel and rinsed my hair at the sink in the kitchen, good job no boats came past. Paul then proceeded to take the taps to bits do a minor alteration then put everything back together again. Now, he wants a shower this evening and you can bet your bottom dollar that the water will be lovely and warm for him and the next time I use the thing the taps will pack up again. Think a trip is on to get new taps.

Paul decided to service the gas hob today as well (working cardi came into its own) all the burners were dismantled and cleaned then when they were tried out after re-assembly 2 didn't work so another minor adjustment and they are all working again.

I had a walk to the co-op for some milk and bread and I also bought two individual Hagan Dass ice creams because I have made a jelly and so for our pudding today, we are going to have jelly and ice cream. Paul doesn't know this yet so if he gets to read this before we have our meal it wont be the surprise I had hoped it will be. Those of you that know Paul know that everyday he asks me “what's for tea?” I think my surprise pudding will leave him speechless. Just hope he likes jelly never thought to ask him before I made it, I have put fruit in the jelly so it is quite exotic.

The nice weather has bought the boaters, walkers, cyclists  and canoeists out, Paul is fishing, I use the term loosely as he is probably chatting more than casting his lure in to the depths of the canal.

Different view.

Yesterday saw us leave Rugby, we turned round and returned to “whence we came”. Passing Del and Al and stopping for a chat interrupting their breakfast or was it brunch. We arranged to met up in the week for a spot of lunch.  Once we were settled on our mooring I was able to get rid of the washing that had been drying in the engine room Paul set up the TV and got stuck into his gaming. It is so funny to see him sat there with his headphones on shouting at the tele some times the language is very colourful but at least the controller is still intact.

This morning as it is such a lovely day Paul changed the gearbox oil while I did chores, you know the kind, hoovering washing floors kind of chores. Think I need to take a leaf out of Al’s book and get some cupboards sorted mind you if I get rid of any more of Pauls clothes he wont have any left, I still have my eye on his “comfort” cardi which I have to wrench off of him to wash it. He keeps telling me it is his working cardi but there hasn't been that much WORK done lately. One day he will wake up and I will have put the thing in the bin, knowing him he would go and rescue it.

Seen quite few boats today and would you believe it 2 hire boats things have been very quiet on that front, the local companies must be suffering in this recession.

Full Tanks

This morning saw us going up to turn round, it was a lovely morning.

As we approached the locks there was Oakfield and another boat in front of us so getting down the locks was a bit on the slow side. As it turned out we all needed water, we were almost empty and as I had washing to do we had to stop. We breasted up to Oakfield and it must have taken us 2 hours to fill our tank, of course these taps are slow at the best of times and with both being in use made it even worse.

001

Watching it doesn't make the tank fill any quicker.

002

Breasted up.

Once full we set off on our way we had to go first as we were on the outside.

004

Happy Smiley face or what!!!!!!!!!

We followed a Gayton Junction hire boat from Hillmorton but by the time we got to the golf course they were no where in sight. Who did we see though, none other then Derwent 6. As is usually the case Del was out on the tow path with a cloth in hand cleaning. Al just popped her head out as we went by.

008

009

Its a pity Del couldn't see the shiny side of Piston Broke but Paul did clean it honest……..

We are now moored up and had planned to stay a few days but the TV reception here for us is awful  so it looks like we will move off sooner than was anticipated. Paul disappeared to Wickes about 2 hours ago to try and get some new wheels for our trolley, he is obviously chatting to someone somewhere. My turn tomorrow for a wander.

Sunday, 19 February 2012

Wow….

Yesterday afternoon while Anne and Keith were partaking of tea with us (Anne supplied the cheese scones) we saw a chap on the tow path with his camera taking pictures, we knew he couldn't be taking any of the boat because where he was standing all that was on the roof was the bucket with the solar lights in the broom and the mop. When we looked out of the window across the canal this is what he was snapping.

004

009

Is this where the pot of gold should be?

007

Double whammy.

Seconds later the heavens opened and it poured with rain.

Now I thought it was about time I got my backside into gear and got my self organised. I don't know about you but I get fed up with having the same meals on a regular basis so I thought I would sort out a menu for the week, (okay I can imagine there are a good few of you out there that do this my daughter in law being one of them). So I sat down with the folder I have compiled of all the recipes I have removed from various books and never used. Having decided what we were having I got my shopping list together and shopped till I dropped. Now these meals are ones I haver never attempted before so should prove interesting. Last night the first one on the list was cooked, now it would have been perfect if I had read the recipe properly, but I got my teaspoons and tablespoons all to cock so my sticky glaze wasn't very sticky at all, I remedied that though and the Braised Pork Fillet with spring onion was very tasty even Paul said so.

This afternoon I am going to attempt a Carrot cake seems easy so lets hope I don't mess this up.

I couldn't believe it this morning when Paul told his brother he was going to polish the side of the boat as it was a nice day. Well he wasn't telling porkies he did get the polish out so we now have a boat that is sparkly, well one side anyway.

Nice dinner..

2 Cosmopolitons. Not both mine I hasten to add.

DSC02496

Emily, Tom, Jess, Jon and Tilly only the cat is missing.

It is nice to be back on the boat but things are getting a bit on the low side with regards to the coal situation, might have to go looking for wood soon.  Paul spoke to Ian on Gosty today and they are still frozen in on their home mooring so we wont be seeing them for a while. With the ice still 4 inches thick we wont be moving for ages yet.

Now need to catch up on the shopping the washing and the cleaning as you can see Paul has been very busy while I have been away.

Tuesday, 7 February 2012

That was nice……….

Yesterday saw us having tea and cake with Del and Al, okay the diet went out of the window just for yesterday honest!!!!!!! Del gave us a rendition of a song he had written, we were very impressed with the lyrics and the guitar playing. Apparently he has dedicated this song to Paul. Think that is a bit sad Del. We then heard the Derwent 6 song and Del and Al made a lovely duo. Was a lovely way to spend a few hours thanks you guys next time I will get Paul to bring his comb and paper sure that will add something, wont be very musical but I am sure we would have a laugh.

Found these photos on the internet, do you think this is how the canals will look in a few years If CaRT don't get their finger out?

Saw the farmer this morning when he came down to feed his sheep. Was surprised when he said he didn't know about one of the flock falling in the canal, he confirmed that all of the sheep are in lamb. Paul explained what had happened and where the sheep was, the farmer went up to the farm, not sure if any one was in but at least he knows now and he said he would let us know if the sheep survived. He did say that it was 4 years ago a family let their dog in to the field of sheep and the dog scattered 6 lambs into the canal, the family  didn't even bother to rescue the lambs just left them to drown. He had witnesses and when he approached the family they denied any knowledge of the event.

Need to get some water later just to keep the tank topped up.

Deep n crisp n………….

Well it arrived as probably all of you are aware, I took the first two pictures last night in the dark just as the snow was beginning to fall.

001

002

Paul took these first thing before he ventured out with the dogs.

003

007

008

It doesn't quite look like this now as we have had numerous people out and about enjoying the slight rise in temperature.

Paul spoke to our friends in Spain and they had a hard frost last night and their duck pond was frozen this morning, just wonder how our old neighbours are fairing in Hungary they were only saying the other day how mild it had been. Of course Pauls brother is roasting in Oz…..

Saturday, 4 February 2012

Would you credit it!!!!!!!!!

Just in the throws of making a cuppa when all the sheep in the field opposite starting running around at first I didn't think anything of it assumed the farmer was on his way with food, but no, there was a Doberman running amok with two women chasing it. At one point they caught the dog and politely asked the thing to get under the fence at which point it escaped again. This time it actually was chasing the sheep and you could see it biting at one. The two women were as much use as a chocolate tpot. By this time a young lad who was walking by had run in the field to help. The poor sheep didn't know which way to go and after about 15 minutes the Doberman chased one sheep into the canal and the dog was finally caught as it was about to go into the canal after the sheep. Did it get a good hiding of course it didn't.

Now if Muchgigglin hadn't come through the sheep would have been able to walk on the ice but of course with the ice having been broken it just went in the freezing water, and with its heavy fleece was really struggling. Paul went out with a boat hook hopefully to make the sheep swim over to one of the women and the lad who were waiting to pull it out of the water. Del arrived with a lasso (the man from Laramie???????). With Paul moving the sheets of ice towards the sheep to encourage it over to the field they were able to haul it out. The poor thing was exhausted and being sodden the thought of it spending the night in the freezing cold didn't bode well. Del suggested they ran over to the farm to see if they knew the farmers phone number, but it would appear they didn't as the people came over with a wheelbarrow, put the sheep in it and took it away, hopefully in to a warm barn where it could get over its ordeal.

People who cant control their dogs shouldn't have them. The only thing that is worrying is that now the Doberman has enjoyed his little game and heaven only knows what would have happened to that sheep if it hadn't gone in the canal, will it do it again? The only way to cure a dog is to pen it with a ram. ( Have you ever seen a ram beat up a dog?) I think the  farmer is within his rights to have the dog put down, I just hope none of these sheep were in lamb.

It has just started to snow so one would assume if left in the field it wouldn't have made it through the night. ( Mint sauce springs to mind and it is Sunday tomorrow…….)

With n without!!!!!!

This morning when we woke I just had to take a picture of the difference between the kitchen window with no double glazing and the lounge one that has it.

001

Kitchen window

002

Lounge window.

The kitchen window is the only one that doesnt have the double glazing it is a job in progress but you can see the benefit we get during this cold weather.

When I took the rubbish down I noticed a boat above the bottom lock that wasnt there yesterday. Had it really travelled in all this ice? Well that question was answered when around 11.30 the ice started cracking Paul and I went up the back of the boat to have a look, Del was looking out of his side hatch doors as well. Then we saw in the distance a boat coming through, as he came under the bridge we noticed a couple of guys up the front with poles.

005

Lo and behold when the boat came by we noticed that it was Tone on Muchgigglin. he informed us that his alternator had packed up and he needed to get back to his home mooring at Wigrams to get on shoreline. I really didnt envy him the journey, no doubt when he gets to Onley  the ice will be very thick.

007

Coming through.

008

Getting closer.

009

Looks cold out there!

010

This is how thick it is here. All of  3ins.

011

Whats your angle?

I expect that his journey will take him quite a while.

As we sit here the sky is getting greyer how long will it be before the snow starts to fall the weather man says around 3pm, I wonder if he will be right? If it freezes again tonight thanks to Tone the ice will be 6 inches thick in places.

Stuck now.

For the past few days the canal has been frozen so you would assume that no one would be travelling, but of course there is always someone to prove you wrong. Wednesday saw a work boat come through at least it broke the ice cleanly but of course when the canal froze that night it was really thick in places. Yesterday when we got back from town after having a really nice lunch in Weatherspoons with Del, Al, Anne and Keith, some one else had broken ice . So this morning I hate to think how thick the ice is but this is what it looked like when we got up.

001

002

No hardy soles have come through today everyone must value their blacking too much. So like a lot of people we are stuck and waiting for the snow that we look like getting on Saturday.

Took pity on the birds and bought some fat balls to keep them going through the cold snap.

003

When I got back from shopping this morning Paul was chatting to a BW guy and he was saying that it has cost 10 million pounds to change all the logos to the new one but the transfer to the trust has been put back yet again. Mind boggles as to the final costing's of the whole thing.

We have had to get a few containers of water just to top the water tank up good job the tow path is frozen solid made pulling the trolley easier.
