Hireboaters!!!
coming back from the chandlery at Hilmorton this afternoon and there was a hireboat coming out of the middle lock. Dad on the tiller son doing the locks well son couldnt be arsed to walk round to shut both gates so just left them open. Paul was livid we shut the gates with Paul hurling abuse at the two of them did, they care did they b******s. Why dont the hireboat companies explain why the locks should be left with the gates shut. Perhaps they do and these people just dont give a toss I dont know ,it just makes me so mad.

It makes more sense to leave one gate open, either with a full lock or empty, especially for single handed cruisers. One can cruise straight into the lock.
Exceptions are special circumstances, like a leaking lock wall, or leaking gates when BW lock instrustions should be observed.
This is a (Normal) frequent occurrence on the Southern GU.

I understand what you are saying but these people just couldnt be bothered to close the gate as it meant walking round and that ws just to much effort. As the locks are Hilmorton are singles the instructions say to leave gates closed.
